Philosophy, Cultivation and Self-Transformation!
As the Blue Mountains cannot boast any university facilities of their own, this course sampler provides a wonderful opportunity for residents across the mountains to participate in university style learning. This celebratory activity will be a course sampler offered by local Doctor of Philosophy, Philip Quadrio.

In providing a lecture in the humanities the aim is for individuals to recognise that learning does not necessarily need to be directly job orientated but can be orientated on other skills like problem solving and particularly social skills. We will illustrate that learning, and particularly the study of philosophy, can be undertaken: as a journey of self transformation; for the pure enjoyment of the process; or because it is something you have always wanted to do.

A philosophical education assists the individual in developing their analytical skills, their problem solving skills and develops their capacity to think ethically about their own choices and the problems that they face.

Southern Cross Toastmasters Area International Speech and Table Topics Contest
Southern Cross Toastmasters are hosting the annual area International speech and table topics contest. If you are like most people, Public Speaking is not your favorite pastime. A Toastmasters club is a “learn-by-doing” workshop in which men and women hone their public speaking skills in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
The Area international speech and table topics contest is one of many organised events where toastmasters learn to present and communicate.
The International speech contest have six speakers representing four of the seventeen toastmasters clubs in Adelaide and each contestant speaks for five to seven minutes on a subject they have chosen.
The table topics contest have six competitors that speak for two to three minutes each on a subject given to them just before they are to speak.
The evening is very entertaining and informative.

Self Defence for Mature Persons
At last a self defence course tailor made to suit mature adults. We know there are lots of courses out there that promise you the world but deliver very little in terms of substance and real strategies that work. This course is different, it focuses on physical strategies, things you can not learn by picking up a book and reading about them. Strategies that could save your life as well as make you fitter.

If You Can Talk You Can Sing
This workshop is for singers and non-singers alike- in fact, Frankie’s whole aim is to do away with the distinctions – and is based on an open-throated type of singing found in all cultures that sing outdoors, cultures where everyone sings just as naturally as they talk. While not aiming to have everyone become a ‘singer’, it offers the opportunity for people to explore and enjoy using their voices in an easygoing and supportive atmosphere. A basic weekend workshop to free the voice, bring awareness of the body-voice relationship and play with the continuum from speaking to singing. Frankie, a renowned singer and teacher, has been running voice workshops in Britain, Continental Europe, North America and Australia since 1975. “There is something essentially so joyous about this way of singing that most people’s resistance melts and they are caught up.” Sheila Miller-‘Folk News’

Despite the odds: Succeeding magnificently as a dyslexic
Most adult literacy teachers have encountered students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia. In some cases, the label has provided a justification for virtually giving up on life. However, in other cases, it has allowed them to name their condition and take control of their life in an all-consuming way. Simon Utteridge, the guest speaker at the QCAL Adult Learner’s Week function, fits the second category.

Simon has a doctorate in Physics and has learned to overcome many of the features related to a dyslexic disability. In this address, he will share with the participants highlights of this journey.

What is dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a disability that is language-based. It is characterised by people experiencing difficulties with the language competencies of reading and writing, specifically the underpinning decoding and encoding skills. Speaking can also be a problem.

The precise causes of dyslexia are not precisely known, but studies have shown differences in the ways that the brain of a dyslexic person develops and operates. These effects vary from person-to-person and can be hereditary. However, dyslexia is not related to level of intelligence. Simon is an excellent example of a highly intelligent person with dyslexia.

Communication: Language, Listening and Empathy- Skills to support volunteers.
This is an adult education workshop event aimed at improving the verbal skills of volunteer and other interested community members. Through a variety of mediums participants will not only learn the skills of active listening but also realise the valuable role it plays in their everyday communications. Whether at work, study or socialising becoming an active listener is a tool for successful relationships. Using some of the insights of Rogerian Counselling to provide strategies for improving communication, the workshop will incorporate role playing as the practical component by which participants can test the theory. The workshop will also explore the effect of language in our daily communications. The workshop will also highlight the high level of education and personal reward that can be found through the learning journey of volunteer work. The workshop will run for two and a half hours and include afternoon tea. It will be a free education event.
