Dear all,
New Years' greetings to everyone!
We here in Australia are in the process of cranking up our Adult Learners Week 2002 planning.
In the past, our Adult Learners Week promotional materials have been quite broad in their focus - promoting all forms of adult learning to everyone. This year we have decided to undertake a two-pronged campaign. While we still produce materials to support and facilitate a generalised celebration of all forms of adult learning, a second aspect of our campaign will be focused towards addressing a key target audience.
In Australia, men are under-represented in most forms of learning, and so this year we are focusing some our campaign specifically on men, aged 45 plus, with an emphasis on rural/regional communities.
To help us address the needs to this audience, I am keen to hear from others as to what has been done in this area elsewhere.
I would particularly appreciate details of any research that you may know of that examines the participation of older men in learning - why they do and why they don't. Also any case studies of successful programs from men would be very helpful.

The section of our website that contains 'behind-the-scenes' planning news for our week might also be of interest. Here you will find our Business plan and also the results of a recent evaluation of audience reach for the Australian Adult Learners Week: http://www.adultlearnersweek.org/coords.html
Also, anyone with an interest in adult learning in museums may like to have a look at the conversations taking place around this issue in Australia at the Learning in Museums Network (LIMN) that I co-convene: http://www.ala.asn.au/limn Feel free to contribute to these discussions as well.
