Dear ALW friends,
After the bulk of the work in the composition of our ALW guide has been
done, I would like to take up the opportunity and provide you with some
background information on 1) the launch of International Adult Learners'
Week on 8 September, 2) the possibilities to participate in or follow this
event from elsewhere, as well as 3) the possibilities to display materials
on your own national activities on this occasion.
1) By now, all of you have read the introduction to the Guide and,
accordingly, are familiar with the fact that the launch will take place
within a so-called Global Dialogue. It might be interesting for you to know
that within the World Exposition EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany (June to
October 2000), ten such "Global Dialogues" will take place, each one set up
by a different national/international organization on a different subject.
The Global Dialogues (GDs) are three-day conferences on the EXPO site, and
the GD 7 entitled "Building Learning Societies - Knowledge, Information and
Human Development" (6 - 8 September) is jointly organized by UNESCO, in
cooperation with the World Bank and the German Foundation for International
Development (DSE). On behalf of UNESCO, the UNESCO Institute for Education
(UIE) in Hamburg and the German National Commission for UNESCO (DUK) in
Bonn have been entrusted with the preparation and implementation of GD 7.
"Platform for the Future" will be the concluding session of GD 7 on the
afternoon of the last day (Friday, 8 September, 15:00 - 17:00). It will,
thus, before proceeding to the celebration of International Literacy Day
and to the launch of International Adult Learners' Week, communicate and
reflect the results of the preceding sessions. This also means that it will
entail quite a number of various elements.
2) We have posted a full package of information materials concerning GD 7
on the whole and the "Platform for the Future" in particular on our
homepages: (www.unesco.org/education/uie) or (www.unesco.de). You will
equally find there the necessary registration form (to be send to and
centrally taken care of by DUK). As you will see from the registration
procedure, some of the sessions of GD 7 will only allow for limited
participation - and since we would like to balance disciplines,
geographical regions, age and gender, our confirmation to attend will be
required. However, the public afternoon elements, and explicitly the
"Platform for the Future" including the launch of International Adult
Learners' Week, are open to a much greater number of participants, and as
many interested people as possible are welcome, particularly from the
international ALW movement.
For all those around the world who will not be able to make it to Hannover,
the public sessions are being webcast and can be followed live through the
Internet. A sound card and boxes are needed, as well as the specific
software (such as Real Player or Media Player), of which the possibility
for downloading is offered free of charge once you access the website EXPO
has installed for this purpose: (www.expo2000.de/englisch/tv/index.html).
You will equally find the public elements of former GDs recorded there. (Of
course, you can also have a look on all the other websites of EXPO in order
to gain a general view of the exposition: www.expo2000.de.)
We all are aware of the fact that only few people will be able to afford
the trip to Hannover, and UIE still facing a severe crisis is not in a
position to promise financial support for travelling. Against this
background, the possibility to follow the launch of International Adult
Learners' Week around the globe through the Internet constitutes a very
valuable possibility, even though the quality of the pictures still is
inferior to TV transmissions.
We are equally aware that far from everybody is in possession of an
individual Internet access. What we strongly suggest, therefore, is that
people get organized and prepare settings and space for a whole group
around one computer and screen to watch and listen collectively, for
instance in community centers or libraries, or wherever this collective
access is feasible. We sincerely encourage you to spread the news on this
opportunity and to help make people aware of it!
3) The exhibition area around the rooms where GD 7 will take place is,
unfortunately, restricted. We also need to share this space with our
co-organizing partners. There is some limited room to expose print
materials, but more importantly, the possibility to present videos (VHS
system), CD ROMs and slides will be much more useful. It appears to us that
the third medium (the slide projector showing numerous slides in constant
succession) would be the best means of all for the presentation of a large
number of different visual materials from different sources. So we
encourage you to make use particularly of the projector, and we recommend
that you put your posters or pictures on slides so that they can be
displayed throughout the day in the exhibition area.
I very much hope that this information "package" has been helpful to you.
With best wishes from Hamburg,
Bettina Bochynek
UIE
