AEAE Andras

In Estonia Adult Learner's Week (ALW) has taken place twice - 9.-13. September 1998 and 11.-15. October 1999.
Similar to many other countries in the world, the aim of ALW is to
ú to bring into people's consciousness and
ú advertise the concept of lifelong learning,
ú to appreciate the work of adult learners and adult training institutions,
ú to introduce various learning possibilities, and
ú to increase the value of training in the eyes of both, the employers and the local governments.

In order to involve all the counties of Estonia in the undertakings of ALW, it was decided to form a support group. For this purpose, AEAE Andras as the main organiser of ALW asked all the county governors, heads of the cities to appoint one county/city district/city representative -adult education specialist to be included in the work of the support group. This year also local adult educator is involved to have wider response and to reach more potential participants to take part in the invents of ALW.

A poster was designed and printed for ALW. 1500 copies of the poster were issued both years, which were then distributed over the country.

In 1999 there were two undertakings on national range:
ú the opening ceremony of ALW on 11th October in Viljandi and
ú the III Adult Educational Forum on 15th October in Tallinn

Following the example of other countries organising Adult Learner's Week, awards were given to
ú Learner of the Year Mrs. Maimu Paumere, Auditor Bureau Paumere & Lukkanen
ú The Educator of the Year Mrs. Annely Soots, Annely Soots' Training Centre in Tartu and
ú The Training-friendliest Organisation of the Year O.G. Elektra Ltd.

AEAE Andras has received reports on local ALW undertakings from all the 14 counties and bigger towns in 1999. Proceeded from the aim of ALW, a number of various acts were organised: open door days, lectures, seminars, exhibitions, literature evenings, debates, visits, etc. The greatest impact of the invent on the grass-root level is that people (especially those living in rural areas) have had a great opportunity to get informtaion about local educators and possibilities to participate in education-process.

The next Adult Learner's Week is planned to take place 9.-13. October 2000. The preparations for the occasion are running and the opening ceremony of 3rd ALW will be held in Kuressaare, on a beautyful island in the west of Estonia on the 9th of October 2000.

As a sign of solidarity AEAE Andras will organise a theme-day "Skills in Modern Information Society" on September 8th, when the rest of the world will celebrate its first international ALW. The stress will be put on the electronical- and IT-literacy skills and on "digital trends" of today's Estonia.
