Learn @ Work case studies (2003): Smith Family

Volunteering

Jeffrey Kramaric began working as a volunteer at The Smith Family Parramatta in November 2002. He worked with the Emergency Help staff throughout November and December taking telephone calls from financially disadvantaged people in the community who felt that they needed assistance over the Christmas period.

Jeff volunteered tirelessly during those busy months, and spent most of his time talking to Smith Family clients and assessing their needs over Christmas, and working on the Christmas order database.

After the Christmas rush was over, Jeff wanted to gain a more detailed understanding of The Smith Family's Emergency Help program, and he began to volunteer one day per week assisting staff with telephone assessments and face-to-face financial interviews. He participated in on-the-job training with existing staff members and learnt about everything from successful interviewing techniques to effective assessment and referral. When a short-term full-time position became available, Jeff successfully applied for the position and became an Emergency Help Worker.

When Jeff was first taken on as a volunteer, he had expressed his feelings of not being sure about what he wanted to do with his future. He had tried a variety of jobs including security work and massage therapy, but was not really sure what he was looking for. During his time as both a volunteer and a paid worker however, Jeff learnt a lot about the area of community services and gained many valuable skills. With the support of the Emergency Help Team Leader at The Smith Family Parramatta, he made the decision to apply for a position in the Certificate IV Community Services Welfare course at TAFE.

Due largely to his learning experiences at The Smith Family, Jeff was able to make a decision about his future and is currently in his first year of study at TAFE. He is looking forward to completing his Diploma before possibly studying in a related field at university.
