Hume Global Learning Centre

Hume City Council's Global Learning Centre is an innovative and unique facility offering a location for informal and formal learning activities and training.

The Centre features state-of-the-art multi-media equipment, computer and Internet training programs, an e-Play and Internet Café, seminar and meeting rooms, an exhibition space and Broadmeadows' first public library - The Age Library.

The Hume Global Learning Centre aims to:

  • Provide learning opportunities for the community in places in Hume which have not had these opportunities previously.
  • Celebrate learning, encourage individuals, support groups and enhance businesses.
  • Ignite a passion for learning and achievement in Hume City.
  • Foster opportunities for community members to share their own interests, expertise and skills with others.

Hume Global Learning Village

The Hume Global Learning Village is a dynamic, inclusive partnership engaging learning providers and facilitators in Hume, Victoria. The Village aims to empower the Hume Community to embrace learning as a way of life in their homes, community, educational institutions and businesses. The Village provides local expertise and advice to Hume City Council in relation to developing a learning culture. The Hume Global Learning Centre is a proud member of the Hume Global Learning Village.

Hume Global Learning Village

The Hume Global Learning Village will:

  • Provide learning opportunities for the community in places and on a scale never before imagined in Hume.
  • Build on the strengths of its members through sharing, communication and collaboration.
  • Reach out to the community and engage people from all cultures, abilities, interests, ages and skills in learning activities.
  • Capitalise on the resources of members to create an accessible and sustainable learning culture.
  • Identify, address and respond to community needs.
  • Explore and broker relevant opportunities to benefit the community of Hume.

On the 24th of June 2003, the founding members of the Hume Global Learning Village endorsed the following Statement of Understanding:

The members of the Hume Global Learning Village understand that social and economic wellbeing is created through the opportunities that learning offers.

They acknowledge that, as organisations fostering learning in Hume, they have both an individual and collective role in bringing about significant and positive change for the people, organisations and businesses of Hume.

David McNulty visits Hume City

On Thursday 2 September as part of Adult Learners Week 2004 and Learn @ Work Day, members of the Hume Global Learning Village, Hume City Council staff and local teachers will have the exclusive opportunity to hear and be part of workshop conducted by David McNulty, a leading international speaker in the field of lifelong learning.

David will be conducting a series of presentations and workshops on creating a learning community. He will provide guests with insights into his work in diverse multicultural communities and assist the Hume Global Learning Village and Council staff to implement the Hume Global Learning Village Strategy.

David is currently the Deputy Director of Blackburn with Darwin Council's Education and Lifelong Learning Department. He and his team have been acknowledged for their innovative approach to working with communities of cultural diversity to build learning communities, by placing learning at the heart of this approach.

David has been commissioned by the UK's Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to work with towns and cities across England to spread good practice. He has also written for NIACE (UK's leading adult learning organisation) on how to work with Asian heritage communities, and currently, he is writing a book for NIACE on building learning communities. He is also a Director and former chair of the Learning Communities Network (LCN) which has over 50 affiliates in the UK. He has worked with colleagues in Australia since 2000 to develop learning community approaches in cities and towns of Australia.

David will impart valuable advice, expertise and inspiration for these groups to achieve the strategies of the Hume Global Learning Village Strategic Plan.

The Hume Global Learning Village is an innovative project developed by Hume City Council that links learning and education providers from across Hume City including six libraries, local schools, neighbourhood houses and learning centres, Kangan Batman TAFE, local businesses, Victoria University and the Visy Cares Learning Centre, Meadow Heights. The Hume Global Learning Village seeks to combine our resources to provide a diverse range of formal and informal learning activities for Hume residents.

After many meetings with Hume Global Learning Village members and the Hume community, the Hume Global Learning Village has developed a Strategic Plan, entitled "Learning Together" to promote lifelong learning in Hume and to provide a diverse range of formal and informal learning activities for Hume residents.

The Strategic Plan was developed to address a range of issues including; improving access to learning opportunities from pre-school to work and in the community, addressing specific learning issues of language, literacy, numeracy and IT skills and further promotion of the many learning opportunities available in Hume.

David McNulty will visit the Hume Global Learning Centre for this invitation only event on Thursday 2 September.
